My Simple Skincare Routine
Now that I’m in my mid-30s, I feel like I’ve tried a lot of different skincare routines. I’ve toyed around with fancy products, drugstore finds, natural skincare products… you name it. For the past few years, I’ve found myself circling back to my tried-and-true favorites. There are only a few products I find myself reaching for on a daily basis and most of them are no-frills finds that I trust and love and look forward to applying to my face in the morning and evening. I’ve paired my skincare routine down to the following:
It’s a five-step routine I genuinely enjoy going through most days. Below you will find the products I swear by as well as when and how I use them in my day-to-day life. Also worth noting is the fact that I am still breastfeeding so I have not explored any of the less natural skincare options out there that many swear by for anti-aging (like retinol), though it’s on my radar to possibly look into in the future. Also, please note that this post only touches on my skincare routine. If you’re interested in my makeup favorites please see this post: Recent Beauty Favorites. My Simple Skincare Routine
I’ve been using Amara Beauty Vitamin C Cleanser for 4+ years and began using it when an esthetician encouraged me to use a cleanser containing vitamin-C. Amara Organics Vitamin C Facial Cleanser was the cleanser I found after looking for a product that was free of many common harsh ingredients that also contained vitamin C and I feel like it’s very gentle while still cleansing my skin of makeup, dirt and all that jazz. I also love NOW Solutions Clarify + Illuminate Rejuvenating Cleanser and consider this one my best effort at selecting a more natural anti-aging cleanser. It uses a clinically-tested, concentrated brown algae extract that, when tested at a 1-2% concentration for four weeks, is shown to help the skin appear more youthful. It also contains marine collagen for its hydration properties, allantoin and manuka honey to help calm and renew the skin while retaining moisture, and extra virgin olive oil to nourish skin and replenish its natural oils. I love the way it makes my skin feel clean without making it feel stripped of all of its natural oils and moisture and have been consistently using this cleanser for more than two years. Note: I buy the NOW Solutions cleanser through their website — it’s cheaper there! — when I order my rosehip seed oil and other natural food and beauty favorites. You may use my code PBFINGERS for 20% off anything on their site. I do not make a commission off of this code but I do have an ongoing Instagram partnership with NOW Foods. When I Use It: In the shower and in the evening before bed. (I keep the Amara Beauty cleanser in the shower and the NOW Solutions cleanser by my sink so I use both every day.) How I Use It: I wash my face in the shower using a soft electronic cleansing brush. (I have a Clarisonic which is now discontinued but very similar to this one.) When I wash my face before bed, I simply use my fingers to massage the cleanser around my face before rinsing and drying my face with a soft towel. Thayers Witch Hazel Alcohol-Free Toner is a fan favorite and always has the best reviews — thousands of them! It’s so incredibly refreshing and I love that it contains aloe vera which is naturally moisturizing so the toner doesn’t make my face feel tight or dry. It’s also a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B and Vitamin A – great for natural skin brightening and anti-aging. I also find it to be slightly cooling which I appreciate during the warmer months of the year. Note: For any fellow Thrive Market customers, I order this toner through Thrive because it’s typically 25% cheaper on their website! When I Use It: Every morning and evening immediately after cleansing. How I Use It: I apply it to a soft cotton pad and use it on my face and neck every morning right when I wake up, immediately when I get out of the shower and then again after washing my face at night.
I’ve developed age spots in my 30s and Hyper Clear Brightening Dark Spot Vitamin C Serum is the only stuff that has worked FAST to noticeably lighten them. It’s packed with 15 percent vitamin C and vitamin E to help brighten skin, smooth fine lines and rough texture, and dramatically clear dark spots from hyperpigmentation. IT WORKS and is now an integral part of my skincare regimen. I also use and love Sunday Riley CEO Vitamin C Brightening Serum and truly believe is has helped make my skin look more even and a little brighter. This stuff is crazy expensive so I use the Hyper Clear serum more often but still use the Sunday Riley serum a couple of times a week. When I Use It: In the evening immediately after washing my face and applying toner. How I Use It: I use my fingers to gently apply it all over my face once I’ve dried it off after cleansing.
Rosehip Seed Oil is my skincare holy grail! Back in 2016, I wrote a blog post all about the benefits of rosehip seed oil and I’m only more passionate about this product five years later. It’s a natural beauty rock star, praised by many for a myriad of reasons, namely its ability to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, correct dark spots and hydrate the skin in a natural way. I honestly crave applying rosehip seed oil to my skin and looove the way it feels on my freshly cleansed face at the end of the day. It’s inexpensive, especially when compared to a lot of other anti-aging serums out there, many of which primarily rely on rosehip seed oil as their main ingredient. When I Use It: Every morning and evening. How I Use It: In the morning, I do not wash my face, but I apply this immediately after I apply toner after I wake up. In the evening (or after I shower), I apply this after washing my face and applying toner and vitamin C serum.
I once read somewhere that if you don’t use sunscreen on your face everyday, you might as well throw all of your other skincare products in the trash. Sunscreen is king and so, so important. It’s something I apply to my face every morning, though the kind of sunscreen I reach for varies a bit. Here’s a brief rundown of my favorites:
When I Use It: In the morning and, if I shower in the middle of the day, again after showering. How I Use It: Sunscreen is the last step of my skincare routine. I apply it after rosehip seed oil but before any makeup I might want to wear that day. Shop This Post

Almond Farm Pumpkin Patch, A Wedding and It Finally Feels Like Fall
Phew what a weekend! It felt like a three-day weekend for our crew since the kids were out of school and Ryan took a vacation day from work on Friday. When we saw a small fall break appear on Chase’s school calendar, we wanted to take advantage of the time off of school and planned to head to a local pumpkin patch as a family. (Overalls: We Wore What / Headband / White sneakers: Madewell) We made our way to a new-to-us spot, Almond Farm, in Concord, North Carolina and spent several hours at the family farm. The big kids were most excited about picking out their own pumpkins to carve so we stopped by the pumpkin patch first and loaded up our wagon with an assortment of pumpkins of all different shapes, colors and sizes. Everyone we met at the farm was so incredibly friendly and kind to our family and I just feel like that bears mentioning because they made us feel so welcome on their farm. One of the women working at the farm went out of our way to offer the boys huge Honeycrisp apples to munch on to give them energy for all of the activities on the farm and they definitely needed the energy boost because there was so much to do! They ran all over the place and loved playing with trucks on the big sand pile, sliding down a tube slide, meandering through a corn maze, playing around in a corn pit and bouncing along on the tractor ride. It was warmer than we anticipated on Friday with temperatures eclipsing 80 degrees but fall came through for us by the end of the weekend! SaturdayOur Saturday plans centered around a wedding Ryan and I had on the agenda in the late afternoon so we figured sticking close to home in the morning was a decent idea. We went on a long family walk and took the boys fishing before heading home for Rhett’s nap. We had one of the boys’ favorite babysitters arrive around 2 p.m. so we could make the drive to Salisbury, North Carolina to celebrate the wedding of my second cousin, Evan and his long-time girlfriend, Gabbie! (Dress: Line & Dot via RueLaLa — also available on Revolve in a rust color and cream. Loved wearing this one because it was so flowy and there was no need for a strapless bra. / Heels — These were shockingly comfortable for 3.5-inch heels. I loved the square toe!) The wedding took place outside on Gabbie’s family’s farm and it was lovely! It had an intimate feel even though we were surrounded by expansive views of beautiful farmland. The couples’ vows were incredibly thoughtful and heartfelt and had more than a few of us tearing up. During the cocktail hour, Gabbie’s sister approached me with an assignment that I thought was so cool! She handed me an iPod touch and asked me to film various moments throughout the remainder of the wedding as part of a wedding video project. Five guests were given iPod touches and the videos filmed are going to be used to create a wedding video for Gabbie and Evan through the company Wedit. Maybe I’ve been out of the wedding scene for too long but I had never heard of this concept and I thought it was so creative and such a neat way to capture a wedding from various guests’ perspectives. I was in charge of helping document Evan’s side of the family’s footage and we had a lot of fun passing the camera around all night! We dug into barbeque for dinner and had a great time dancing until it was time to say goodbye and make the drive back to Charlotte. Gabbie and Evan’s wedding was wonderful and only solidified in our minds the fact that we need to plan a family reunion ASAP. The last time we got everyone together at the same time was four years ago during our big trip to the Outer Banks! SundaySunday was the first day that really felt like fall in our area. We awoke to temperatures in the mid-4os and it felt nice to bundle up a bit and enjoy a walk in the crisp air. (Flannel Top / Cropped Sweatshirt: Audrey 3+1 — a thredUP find! / Leggings: Lululemon / Shoes: Adidas) We made our way to our favorite Greenway in Huntersville and walked to a little duck pond near Birkdale Village. Chase loved biking along the greenway while Rhett and Ryder rode in the stroller and we made more than a few little pit stops to check out butterflies, bugs, turtles, geese and ducks. We arrived home around lunchtime and lucked out when Rhett and Ryder took naps at the same time. Ryan put some of our summer stuff up in our garage storage while they slept and Chase and I read a few chapters of Harry Potter. We’re almost at the end — I think we have 40ish pages left — and it’s been such a wonderful experience reading this book with him. I love hearing his predictions and cannot wait to watch the movie together when we’re done! Eventually everyone was awake and we hung out around the house for the rest of the evening. Ryan grilled out and I made us a batch of homemade cinnamon ice cream with Biscoff cookies. It was fabulous and I’m not embarrassed to admit it’s already all gone. Clearly we were all a fan of this one! After dinner and dessert, we did the whole bed time routine before Ryan and I headed to bed ourselves to read until we could no longer keep our eyes open. And now I’m ready to get this Monday rockin’! I hope you all had a great weekend and thanks so much for stopping by the blog today! Nootropics and Smart Drugs: Brain-Boosting Substances?
Seems humans have always been in a constant search for the silver bullet or magic pill to make us faster, stronger, and smarter. Sure, there are more difficult and time-consuming ways of getting these things done, usually with training and education. But people are fascinated (and dare I say obsessed?) with the search for a … Continue reading Nootropics and Smart Drugs: Brain-Boosting Substances?... Create a Powerful Framing for the World
By Leo BabautaThe way we view life is usually invisible to us, and yet it is probably the most powerful thing in our lives. For example, one person might hear the words of another person and feel incredibly hurt, stressed, angry, and then it ruins their entire week … while another person might hear the same words and feel compassion and love for the other person. Neither person is right or wrong, they simply have different views of the world. The way we look at the world is called our “framing” of the world. The lens through which we see our lives. Our view of things. There is no “right” lens or framing, nothing that we “should” choose. In fact, “right” and “should” are two common framings of the world. There are simply different lenses, different ways to frame anything. And if we bring awareness to the frame, we can choose. I’m going to share a few examples of framing, and then share how you might create something powerful for yourself. Some examples:
As you can see, there isn’t only one way to view a situation (or another person, or yourself). In fact, I’ve only listed a few in each example, but there are endless possibilities. And which view you choose will determine your experience, and often the results you get and what actions you take. Our entire lives are shaped by our framing. And we usually don’t choose them, they are automatic. Bringing Awareness to Our FramingSo how can we make them less automatic and more of a choice? We have to shine a light on them. How am I viewing this situation that causes me to feel and react this way? What kind of framing would have me avoid this task or situation? What lens would make me have this experience of life? Some common ways to frame things:
There is nothing wrong with these views — we all have them somewhere in a place we can’t see. They’re automatic, and they shape our lives. Which of these might explain some difficulties you’re having with habits, relationsihps, work, health, happiness? Choosing a Powerful FramingThere are endless possibilties, too many for me to list. I’ll list a few anyway! The idea is to look at a situation, bring awarenes to what your current framing might be, and then decide to reframe it for yourself. Try on the new framing, and practice seeing things in this way for awhile, and see what results you get. There is no right answer. Pick a situation that seems particularly challenging: maybe you have not been eating healthily, or feel bad about yourself, or are frustrated with someone, or feel like you’re avoiding hard tasks, or have a hard time with a family member who is suffering through health problems. Take that one situation, and examine your view. What framing might cause the reaction you’re having? You don’t have to get it exactly right, but take a shot. Are you committed to that framing? Would you be open to letting it go and trying on something new? Here are a few possibilities among the limitless number … a situation or task or person might be:
These are a few of my favorite. I try them on all the time. What would you like to choose? Could you try it on for awhile, and see what emerges? Things I’m Loving Friday #388
Hello, hello! Today is a little unusual for a Friday over here because Chase is off school and Ryan is taking a vacation day so we can hit up a local pumpkin patch for some fall fun without worrying about crowds and craziness. I’m really looking forward to it! As for the weekend ahead, we’ll be attending a wedding and I’m not going to lie, we are pretty darn psyched to party it up on Saturday night! We have a babysitter booked and now I just need to figure out what to wear. I truly cannot remember the last time I wore a cocktail dress and heels so let’s all just cross our fingers and hope I don’t fall on my face. Before signing off this morning, I wanted to take a moment to dive right into my weekly roundup of favorites, Things I’m Loving Friday style. I missed last week because we were in Florida but it feels good to be back at it today! I always love it when you guys tell me about something you’re loving this week, so feel free to join in the fun in the comments section. Have a wonderful weekend, my friends! Things I’m Loving Friday
We celebrated Ryan’s birthday last week and had fun making him feel a little extra loved on his special day! The boys loved creating a hot-and-cold scavenger hunt for him and hid little clues around the house for Ryan to find that each said something Chase and Ryder loved about him. They also helped make Ryan a birthday cake and we went with a funfetti cake that was so delicious! If you need a good homemade funfetti cake recipe, this one we followed from Sugar Spun Run was a winner. As for gifts, there was one gift I could not wait to give to Ryan because it turned out better than I could have imagined. I ordered him a custom embroidered portrait of Sadie and the woman who created it — Laura from the Etsy shop St. Pierre Artistry — did the most incredible job. Below is the picture I sent to Laura to use for the portrait she created: She absolutely nailed it and the gift had both me and Ryan feeling a little emotional. Moments still continually pop up that really pull at our hearts and make us miss our Sadie girl so much. We are still trying to find the perfect place to display the embroidered portrait of Sadie and truly cannot get over just how much it looks like her. (Just a head’s up if you’re hoping to order a portrait for a loved one for the holiday season — It took about 1.5 months from when I ordered the portrait to receive it so definitely keep that in mind and order sooner rather than later if it’s on your radar!) Gotta love it when a $22 find ends up blowing you away! I absolutely adore the square neckline trend and think it’s such a pretty and flattering neckline on tops so when I saw this steal of a bodysuit on Amazon, I figured it was worth a shot and added it to my cart. The reviews had me feeling hopeful and I ended up loving this one so much! It’s soft and has such a classic look on its own but know it’ll also be great layered under different sweaters and jackets this fall and winter. I was also in the market for a flannel top in a longer length and ordered this one in two prints (orange + black for Halloween/fall and black + white because it’s such a classic) and think they will be a fall staple for me. I’ve seen flannels styled a million different ways and since I’m such a leggings + joggers girl in the fall, I think they will help motivate me to get dressed in “real clothes” a little more often since they’re comfortable and very mom-life friendly, too.
Maddie Dawson has such a whimsical and almost magical way of writing and I couldn’t wait to dive into her latest novel, The Magic of Found Objects. I was on the lookout for a feel-good easy read and this novel fit the bill perfectly, as I assumed it would having previously read and loved Matchmaking for Beginners and A Happy Catastrophe by the same author. (Note: Matchmaking for Beginners was my favorite of the three novels so I’d start there if you’re new to Maddie Dawson’s work.) The Magic of Found Objects follows the life of Phronsie Linnelle, a woman whose very existence stems from a chance meeting between her eccentric, bohemian mother and hard-working farmer’s son father at Woodstock. A completely out-of-character tryst for Phronsie’s father and a very-much-in-character moment of love and lust for her mother resulted in the birth of Phronsie and her twin brother Hendrix. The marriage between Phronsie’s parents seemed doomed from the start, leaving Phronsie deeply confused about love, as she’s faced disappointment from her steadfast father and magical mother over the course of her entire life. Judd, Phronsie’s best friend from childhood has been a constant source of loyalty and companionship her whole life and when he make a proposal saying they should abandon the idea of “true love” and marry each other instead, Phronsie surprises herself by considering his proposal. Maybe a marriage based on friendship and respect is better than a marriage based on passion and love, especially when it seems like so many marriages based on “real” love fail. Is marrying her best friend the answer to Phronsie’s lifelong struggle with love? Or is she settling for something safe when true love may be just around the corner?
We’ve been so into puzzles in our house lately which makes me so happy! I blame my mom for my love of puzzles and seeing Chase and Ryder get so into them brings me so much joy. Ryder is truly puzzle-obsessed lately and sprints over to our puzzle collection to select new puzzles to do every single day. He loves doing 100+ piece puzzles with me but will fly through 50-piece puzzles (and under) on his own. I’m so impressed with his patience and passion for puzzling right now and also a little shocked with just how much time he’ll spend quietly puzzling. It’s such a contrast to his otherwise energetic personality and is something I hope he’ll continue to enjoy his whole life. Last year, Ryan and I began a tradition where we get each of the boys a special Christmas ornament to represent something they love that year and this year I ordered Ryder a puzzle piece ornament and can’t wait for it to arrive!
